A few years back, as a fairly casual runner, I was running a couple of times a week and decided to challenge myself to complete the Cambridge Half marathon. I have since completed this 3 years’ on the run and enjoyed every step.

Having enjoyed a half marathon, I then entered the ballot for the 2020 London marathon, not thinking I would succeed, as I know many people who have entered several times and have never secured a spot. However, much to my surprise, I was awarded a place! Now the real training started. Unfortunately, as we now know, the 2020 event was cancelled due to Covid. At that point, my training was well underway and I was feeling reasonably prepared. Unfortunately, lockdown put the brakes on my training schedule, and, as with many people, life changed significantly with isolating, working from home, homeschooling, and all the uncertainty that came with these circumstances.

Fast forward to 2021 and the event has now been re-scheduled for October. Although I had been running a little throughout lockdown, I hadn’t kept to any kind of plan so I was almost starting from scratch and needed to find my enthusiasm again. It was then that I thought about running for a charity, thinking this would be an excellent motivator! Almost by chance, I saw a fundraiser to raise money for an emotional support dog for a young man called Jasper, who is autistic. As spoken by his Mum, ‘Jasper has always had a connection with animals, and he has a special affinity with dogs. They comfort Jasper in ways we can’t. He understands them and they understand him, without any judgement or expectation’

This sentiment really stood out and I wanted to help, so here we are! I’m now committed to running 26.2 miles in the hope I can raise some much-needed funds to help Jasper realise his dream.
